Saint-Denis Field Trip!!!

Saint-Denis was the very first Gothic Cathedrals. Before Saint-Denis was a saint he was just a simple priest. He wanted to better the church, so he started to take up donations from the town’s people. With the money given from the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor and all the hard work that the community but into the church it became the very first Gothic Cathedral.

So you may be wondering what makes a Gothic Cathedral! Well here we go!

In this photograph you can see the column on that is connected to the building. The thing that is connecting the column to the cathedral is called a flying buttress. It is called that because the column is a buttress. These were made to help balance the weight of the cathedrals when they started to get taller.

This called the Nave. It is the long hall of a cathedral. As the cathedrals got taller so did the naves which let more light into the cathedral. The Gothic movement wanted the cathedrals to become more light and more height. It is so they could be closer to the Heavens!

Here are a few more photos!
